Dahlonega Receives The “American Viticultural Area” (AVA) Designation

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – For lovers of wine and wineries, Lumpkin County is now at the center of the Dahlonega Plateau American Viticultural Area (AVA).  The federal designation indicates the geography, geology, climate, and the ability of vineyards in this area to grow grapes that produce great wine. It’s the first designation for a wine region contained solely within the state of Georgia, and the AVA covers 133 square miles, encompassing most of Lumpkin County and part of White County.  The news is catching the attention of media of all stripes — from Southern Living Magazine to WSB TV, the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Gainesville Times and a host of other outlets.

Dahlonega is now being called the “Napa of the South” in some media circles.
